Designer-Inspired Layered Leather Geometric Necklace

Here at Vintage Renewal, we love the idea of having a zero waste policy.  Therefore everything is treasured and is saved for a rainy day project.

Today, we are going to show you how we turned leather scraps into a beautiful Designer-Inspired Layered Leather Geometric Necklace (using our brand new Cricut Explore Machine).  Did we mention that we love this Cricut Explore Machine?  So much, that we decided to enter Vintage Renewal into the Cricut Design Star competition to kick off the Fall with a challenge!

Our first team challenge (as a member of Team 15) is a "Designer-Inspired" Fashion Project.  The first thing we did over here at Vintage Renewal was jump on the Pinterest inspiration train to see what we could find.  This little beauty below, was just waiting to inspire us!

Note:  Unfortunately, there is no information leading us to the original designer of our inspiration necklace below.  Please do let us know if you have any ideas on who the creator  of this beautiful piece is.  We love to always give credit, where credit is due.

The first step in our original design is to gather your materials.  For our project, we used:

  • Leather scraps to create both large and small triangle cuts
  • One 14" chain for the top layer of the necklace
  • One 18" chain for the bottom layer of the necklace
  • A pair of euro punch pliers 1.25mm round to poke holes in the leather scraps
  • A small pair of pliers to help open and close the jump rings (but you can use your fingers if you don't have them)
  • A package of round jump rings 9mm (buy two just in case)
  • A pair of scissors to cut your leather to fit the mat or to cut your leather if you don't have a Cricut Explore Machine
  • One Cricut Explore Machine with a regular blade installed
  • One strong grip adhesive cutting mat

We were initially inspired to add more color to our project using both denim and leather combinations, but the denim didn't work out for this particular purpose.   We happily moved forward with our leather combinations and the results were striking!

We began by building our bottom layer in Cricut Design Space.  You can click here to access this layer now.

Note:  I love how this layer looks all by itself, if you want to do a half project.

Then we proceeded to build our top layer, which you can also access here in Cricut Design Space.

You can access the complete double necklace design right here.  I recommend this link if you are going to make the entire project in one sitting.

The large triangles in the bottom layer are W 1.92" x H 1.59" (as shown above in Cricut Design Space).

The small triangles in the top layer are approximately W 1.24" x H 1.02".   In our design we used 5 different leathers colors to create our finished piece.   Cricut Design Space will break each color off onto their own individual mats. This feature is awesome and makes cutting and designing a snap!  I used the strong grip mat for this project (which holds the leather down into place when the machine is cutting the triangles for you).

Note:  Be sure to remove the plastic adhesive cover from your mat when cutting your materials.  I learned this the hard way and discarded a couple of mats in my learning curve.

These are my 5 mats for this project.  If you do not have a Cricut, you can hand cut the same number and size of pieces on your own.

Mat 1: contains 4 large triangles and 6 small triangles.

Mat 2: contains 6 large triangles and 8 small triangles.

Mat 3: contains 6 large triangles and 5 small triangles.

Mat 4: contains 4 large triangles and 6 small triangles.

Mat 5: contains 3 large triangles and 6 small triangles.  You can easily change the material choices and colors around in the Cricut Design Space based on your needs.  In this project, we selected the heavy leather option for our material settings.

I had my Cricut machine make the cut over the triangles 5 x and used a significant cut pressure in consideration of the material thickness.  You can change these settings by selecting the Materials Settings button shown in the picture above (it's just below, and to the right of where it says "Go")

After cutting, be sure to sort your materials into piles.

Please note, that the holes that you see punched in the materials below were not close enough to the point of the triangle and had to be re-cut for the project to work successfully.

Use your Cricut Design Space screen as a guide.  Then, layout your pattern to make sure you feel comfortable with the direction of the design.

Start at the top and connect the first row to the necklace chain, then design top-down and then connect the rings across, row by row.   Punch your small holes close to the corners of your triangles in order to join multiple rings together (but not so close that they will tear). You will be using the same holes for multiple jumps rings, so just be patient and work the rings through the small holes as needed.

When you are finished, you will have two separate necklaces, like this:

Just layer then both and wear!

Be sure to make the top necklace as tight as you can (like a choker) in order to get the desired look.

Both the sewing and embroidery operations are controlled step-by-step while using backlit, LCD touch-screen. All great models were created using their own unique features and quality.
This machine provides you with maximum versatility for
embroidery.

I love it, and now I have a reason to buy the cricket I have been stalking at Michaels!
